Bay Area Frugalistas can thank President Obama for the opening of a new women’s formalwear rental store in Oakland. DRESS: Luxury Attire on Loan, the Bay Area’s first evening gown rental service allows women “try” without having to “buy”.
OAKLAND, CA, January 1, 2010 – The idea for DRESS: Luxury Attire on Loan, a new women’s formalwear service in Oakland, began with President Obama. When a friend’s excitement about attending the President’s inaugural ball turned from “what to wear?” panic into “what to wear without breaking the bank?” DRESS owner, JaiHonna German had an “aha” moment. “Men have had it so easy all these years. Why shouldn’t women have the same opportunity to rent stunning formal wear without spending a small fortune?” says German.
DRESS recently opened its doors in the tony Oakland neighborhood of Rockridge. The store, conveniently located within walking distance of the Rockridge BART station, provides evening gowns and cocktail dresses from the runways’ of today’s hottest designers, along with a streamlined selection of unique vintage gowns – all for a fraction of their retail cost. The overflowing racks at DRESS mean that almost any woman can find a dress that not only fits her style and occasion but also won’t overburden her pocketbook. The store features an array of high-end designers, like Vera Wang, Armani, Carolina Herrera, and Marchesa Notte as well as more casual styles from designers like Milly New York, Foley and Corinna and Marc Jacobs. Dresses can be rented for a total of three days and cleaning costs are included in the overall rental fee.
German, a seasoned, former retail marketing executive at Levi Strauss, Inc. not only has plenty of fashion know-how she also knows how exhausting, and expensive, eveningwear shopping can be. “I’ve had the same frustrating experience other women have had. You’re invited to a fabulous event and need something stunning to wear but can’t afford high-end designer prices. Or, maybe you splurge but then end up only wearing your expensive show stopper a handful of times. Frankly, it’s a lose-lose situation. Which is exactly why I opened DRESS.” says German.
While this holiday season may see more budget friendly soirees taking place that doesn’t mean every woman still doesn’t want to look her very best – she just needs to do so on a budget.
